{"id":71,"date":"2013-06-11T15:36:48","date_gmt":"2013-06-11T14:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/radicalglasgow.me.uk\/wp\/?page_id=71"},"modified":"2013-12-15T10:13:29","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T10:13:29","slug":"poetry-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/radicalglasgow.me.uk\/?page_id=71","title":{"rendered":"Poetry 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"twocolumns\">\n<div class=\"leftcolumn\">\n<h2>To A Cautious Poet<\/h2>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">You can write poems<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">On venetian blinds<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Flash them on and<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0 lastline\">Off to the world<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Someday<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">The men with<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Guns and butter<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Will see you from the street,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Tramp up the stairs<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">To your room,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0 lastline\">Strangle you with the cord of your caution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Then they will praise you<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">As a tragic genius,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Your readers will admire<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Your poems<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">While your body<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Hangs<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0 lastline\">Behind the blinds<\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">John Carey<\/p>\n<h2>Winter<\/h2>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Dark malefic clouds crowd the sky<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">winds carry the stench of carrion to every nostril,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">the crazy ape has followed the faculty of hawks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">All around stand crows, magpies, jackdaws, vultures,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">edacious eyes anticipating their putrid feast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">A weary Cassandra laments;<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">doves, hearts weeping for a better yesterday<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0 lastline\">forsake their olive branches.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rightcolumn\">\n<h2>I\u2019m Proud<\/h2>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">I\u2019m proud of my people, proud to be one of them,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">that great mass on society\u2019s bottom rung.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Those who, with coal-dust under their nails<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">in their eyes, in their lungs<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">claw at the earths entrails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Their brothers,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">cement in their hair<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">in their mouth, in their ears,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">oil ingrained in their fingers,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">on their face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Sisters, glistening with sweat<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">midst the ceaseless noise of machines<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">that throw out shirts, shoes, toys, carpets<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">for other people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Those with soil and sweat stuck to their skin<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">smelling of the earth, feeding the multitude,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">grinding out their lives in a harsh pitiless system<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">weighted down<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">with a sack load of half-dead dreams,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">sometimes brought to their knees<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">by a tidal wave of despair,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">never defeated,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">groping in the dark to find tomorrow,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">keeping hope alive;<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">they amaze me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Somehow, from somewhere<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">in this cold, cruel<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">unforgiving scheme of things<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">they find love for their children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">Not a teaspoonful, not a cupful,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">but buckets full, to bathe them in,<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">to pour over them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">They seem to know<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">that one day this world will be ours<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0\">and to take care of it<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse indent0 lastline\">we will need those who have been loved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To A Cautious Poet You can write poems On venetian blinds Flash them on and Off to the world Someday The men with Guns and butter Will see you from the street, Tramp up the stairs To your room, Strangle &hellip;
